Bright Horizons Teaches Disabled Students More Than Just Gardening
Behind Janel Rowe’s classroom is a garden. Rowe, a teacher at Bright Horizons School in Pompano Beach, has been running the garden since the beginning of the year as part of Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program (HSP). Bright Horizons is a Broward County Public School, but for the most severe handicapped students – a mix of 140 Autistic, intellectually disabled, medically fragile and physically disabled kids. “The garden provides our students with pre-vocational, vocational, entrepreneurial, academic and therapeutic opportunities,” Rowe says. Earth Day Celebrations at PATCH
More than 200 children and adults came out to our Earth Day festivities at the Dania Beach PATCH and Sistrunk Farmers Market this weekend, planting sunflowers, making their healthy living pledge, and even releasing ladybugs into the garden. Alliance for a Healthier Generation had a pledge tree where kids can write down their healthy promise. Many kids pledged to drink more water, eat less candy, and even watch less TV. FAU Club Finds Over 5,000 Butts in an Hour
When Florida Atlantic University’s Boca Raton campus held “Butt Day” earlier this month, they invited Transforming Our Community’s Health (TOUCH) partner American Lung Association (ALA) to aid in a clean up. What they found was thousands of cigarette butts – more than 5,100 of them, actually. On April 3, FAU’s Exercise Science and Health Promotion Club (ESHP) hosted Butt Day – a day to learn about the dangers of tobacco products and increase awareness for the need of a university-wide tobacco-free policy.
